Driver faces multiple charges in Bakersfield motorcycle accident.

Bakersfield police arrested a suspected drunk driver who caused a motorcycle accident near a DUI checkpoint.

According to police reports, the unidentified motorist allegedly struck a motorcyclist along Golden State Highway after attempting to evade a DUI checkpoint that was set up on Union Avenue. The collision occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday, November 27th. After causing the motorcycle accident, the driver attempted to flee but was apprehended by police after a brief pursuit. Emergency personnel transported to the motorcyclist to a local hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

The driver was arrested and charged with several counts, including DUI causing serious injury, felony hit-and-run and failure to yield to police. Police also arrested four other individuals on suspicion of DUI, three of whom were repeat offenders. Additionally, approximately 40 cars were impounded with 31 of the drivers cited for failing to have a current California driver's license.

Fortunately the victim in this case was not killed and no one else suffered serious injury. However, he potentially faces a difficult road to recovery which may involve a lengthy hospital stay, extensive surgeries and physical therapy. If he lacks sufficient insurance coverage, he may be facing hefty medical bills. Combined with a loss of income due to his inability to work and the victim could find himself in the middle of a financial nightmare. Under California law, he does have the right to pursue a civil lawsuit against the negligent driver to seek damages for his injuries. The driver may also be forced to pay restitution if convicted of the charges.
